The Ultimate Foodporn: Eggslut in DTLA

When I first discovered Eggslut on Instagram, I was surprised that Heaven on Earth had such a raunchy name. Nestled in Downtown LA just near the Fashion District, this popular sandwich stand is the perfect place to find some good, dirty #yolkporn.

Sure, the menu is small and yes, you will probably have to wait in a line that wraps around the entire kitchen. But Eggslut is the kind of place that you have to try at least once. And that’s coming from someone who has probably ventured to DTLA maybe half a dozen times in her entire life.

This teeny open restaurant is located in the Grand Central Market, along with everything from fresh produce to an organic coffee stand to authentic Mexican mole sauce.

I definitely recommend bringing a few people not only so you can order more things, but so while someone waits in line you can stroll through the market and scope out the other delicious foods available. Plus the guy who works at the coffee stand is super cute, so that’s a must-see. Now onto food!

This is the sandwich that lured me here: Bacon, Egg, and Cheese. A simple name for a simple sandwich, but each element makes it amazing. The gooey cheese blends in with the running egg yolk and the crisp, salty bacon gives it a nice crunch. The best part is the chipotle ketchup – not spicy at all (enough with the misleading names, guys!) but it adds a touch of sweetness that ties together all of the savory goodness.

Off of the lunch menu comes the Egg Salad Sandwich. Everything comes on these soft brioche buns, and the ratio of bun to egg salad was perfect. I loved the bitterness and texture of the arugula, but the sandwich could have used some elevation – maybe some of the chipotle ketchup!

I LOVE food porn, but sometimes the best things are the ugliest (have you seen my dog?). The Fairfax is their most popular sandwich and I quickly discovered why: it’s stuffed with soft scrambled eggs, melty cheese, fresh chives, buttery caramelized onions, and sriracha mayo. This was definitely the highlight of the meal and what I most recommend! I mean, just look at all of that cheddar.

The most unique menu item is accurately named: the Slut. It’s soft, buttery, yolky, and sooo slutty. Soft, warm mashed potatoes topped with a coddled egg and then chives and grainy salt. On the side comes a crusty baguette for dipping into the egg and potatoes. Plus it comes in an adorable little glass jar!

So next time you’re in the mood to be a little naughty, check out Eggslut! No shaming here, folks.
