Can you tell I like food? I went to LA for the weekend and when I go to LA it means FOOD. And lots of it. My life is basically made up of food pics…
DONUTS! The best kind of food because it’s a blend of the best meals – dessert and breakfast. DK’s was on my list because it’s an LA staple and one of the most famous donut shops in the city. Plus I just happened to be in Santa Monica so I figured, why not? My sister and I stopped by the small store on a deliciously sunny Friday and our eyes glazed over at the ‘nuts (trademark pending) before us. There were cronuts and wownuts (waffle donuts?) and purple rounds made from the ube root. They were a bit pricey ($1-3 depending on how fancy) so we stuck with a half dozen because we are both poor and fat.
After careful debate, we decided upon a pistachio ube donut, a maple bacon bar, something with fruity pebbles stuck to it, honey glazed cinnamon, chocolate devil’s food, and a plain old chocolate bar for my boring sister. OMG. I see why the place is famous. The ube was one of my favorites because it was purple (duh) but also because it was perfectly moist and soft. The fruity pebbles donut was also really good, but should be eaten fresh since the pebbz got a bit soggy after a while. The maple bacon bar is a must-have because, ya know, an entire piece of bacon is stuck to it and you can’t possibly go wrong with that. The honey cinnamon and devil’s food were also good but nothing special compared to the others. I could have eaten the entire box by myself, but I restrained. I shall be back though. Also, they have their own geotag on snapchat! I want one of those for my apartment…
Lemonade. Where do I even begin? This is one of my favorite places and I almost always go when I am in LA. If they opened one in Santa Barbara I would be there for lunch every. single. day. I love the cafeteria style because you get so many choices but at a really affordable price. The best best best thing on the menu is the pineapple coconut chicken with green beans and peppers. It’s spicy and sweet and the soft chicken goes so well with the crunchy beans. The truffle mac and cheese is probably their most famous item and for good reason. It’s crazy soft and cheesy and the truffle flavor is definitely not subtle. This time, I tried a seasonal item (they add new things every season!) which contained beets and cantaloupe. The beets were a bit too undercooked for me and it needed another layer, maybe mint or a soft cheese. But the lemonade (they have a ton of flavors – it’s called “Lemonade” for a reason) makes up for it. I usually get the watermelon rosemary which is insanely sweet and delicious, but opted for something new – guava limeade. It was a bit sour and super refreshing, perfect for a spring day in Manhattan Beach. If there is one near you, go now. If not for your own taste buds, then for my sake.
I think it’s time for my to go make dinner now…
